At 22, A Lump in My Groin Led to a Stage 4 Melanoma Diagnosis

Mariena Browning, a 28-year-old from Pocatello, Idaho, was diagnosed with stage 3 melanoma after finding lumps in her groin at 22 years old, a rare location for this aggressive skin cancer. Her cancer later progressed to stage 4, spreading to her stomach and brain. Despite an atypical presentation, Browning has emerged as a strong advocate for sun safety and sunscreen use. Today, she is in remission and preparing to celebrate her child’s first birthday.

In the summer of 2018, Browning noticed multiple tender lumps in her left groin, which were later diagnosed as melanoma originating in her lymph nodes. The cancer did not initially present with any noticeable skin abnormalities, leading to challenges in determining the primary site of the disease. She underwent surgery to remove affected lymph nodes and began oral chemotherapy, experiencing severe side effects such as temporary vision loss.

After six months of treatment, Browning experienced intense abdominal symptoms and passed pure blood while using the bathroom. Hospitalized with a suspected spread of cancer to her colon, further tests revealed a bacterial infection known as C. diff, likely contracted due to a weakened immune system from her cancer treatment. The ordeal was a frightening and stressful episode in her cancer journey.

Browning’s treatment journey took a dramatic turn when she was slated to begin a clinical trial, only to have it shut down due to adverse side effects experienced by previous participants. Subsequent testing revealed additional melanoma tumors in her stomach, moving her to stage 4 of the disease. Despite these setbacks, she remained resilient in her fight against cancer, undergoing surgeries and intensive treatment regimens to combat the disease.

Throughout her battle with melanoma, Browning has emphasized the importance of sun safety and sunscreen use, advocating for regular skin checks and early detection of skin cancer. Her story serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of cancer and the importance of vigilance in monitoring one’s health. Despite facing numerous challenges and setbacks, she has emerged as a survivor, inspiring others with her courage and determination.

As Browning looks towards the future and celebrates milestones such as her child’s first birthday, she reflects on the journey that has shaped her into a passionate advocate for cancer awareness and prevention. Her story serves as a testament to the strength of the human spirit in overcoming adversity and fighting against the odds. Through her advocacy and resilience, she continues to spread awareness about melanoma and the importance of early detection in improving cancer outcomes.
