Cadillac Aims to Create a Hypercar



Cadillac has a history of creating remarkable concept cars, such as the 2002 Cien with a powerful V-12 engine. Though this mid-engine masterpiece never made it to production, GM’s luxury brand is not giving up on the idea of a supercar or even a hypercar. In fact, GM’s design boss, Michael Simcoe, expressed interest in creating a flagship performance model in an interview with Australian magazine Carsales. While not giving away too many details, Simcoe stated that Cadillac could build a hypercar and that the model may not necessarily be fully electric. With the brand’s racing ambitions and Formula 1 plans with Andretti, a high-performance Cadillac seems like a natural progression.

The idea of keeping internal combustion engines (ICE) alive for a potential hypercar is supported by Cadillac’s V-Series.R race car, which utilizes a V-8 engine. Additionally, the brand’s Formula 1 aspirations with Andretti hint at a V-6 powertrain. Andretti Cadillac’s switch to a 2026 start aligns with new engine regulations requiring the use of sustainable fuels. Although GM won’t become a power unit manufacturer until 2028, Andretti Cadillac may need to partner with an engine supplier for the first two F1 seasons. The concept of a Cadillac hypercar isn’t far-fetched, considering past examples like the 2003 Sixteen with a massive V-16 engine. With successful models like the $325,000 Mustang GTD from Ford, Cadillac could potentially tap into the high-performance luxury market. In a separate conversation with CarExpert, Michael Simcoe shared his thoughts on SUVs, calling them a “necessary evil” despite their dominance in the market. However, Cadillac remains committed to sedans, with plans to introduce a new model in the future to join the Celestiq. Despite the prevalence of SUVs, Simcoe believes sedans are superior in terms of aesthetics, driving experience, and aerodynamic efficiency due to their lower ride height. While only the CT4, CT5, and Celestiq are available in the US, Cadillac continues to offer the CT6 in China, where sedans remain popular. GM’s Buick division also sells traditional body style sedans like the LaCrosse, Regal, and Verano, though these models are not offered in the US market.
