W&P Popper Popcorn Bowl Review: This Microwave Popcorn Popper Bowl Changed My Snack Game in 2022

Sometime during the pandemic (who knows when because what is time?), I became a serious snacker. Without the perks of an office kitchen, my apartment’s kitchen cabinets became stuffed with potato chips and cookies and Pirate’s Booty—which I ate at all hours of the day. I became to feel like I’d turned into a walking, talking cheese puff, and it irritated me how much of my precious shelf space was eaten up by snacks. It was in late 2021 that I stumbled upon the surprising answer to my problems: W&P’s microwave popcorn popper.

If you’re like me, you’re used to eating popcorn that claims to taste just like movie popcorn—either big, pre-popped bags of it or the kind that comes in single-use microwavable bags stuffed with kernels coated in butter-flavored chemicals. Thanks to the Big Popcorn industry (it’s gotta be real, right?), it never really occurred to me that I could pop my own popcorn. Wild, right? Turns out, it’s incredibly easy, cheap, and lets me control exactly what goes on my popcorn. All you need, for starters, are a bottle or a bag of popcorn kernels (and there’s a world of kernels out there, from the supermarket staple Orville Redenbacher to organic kernels to rainbow craft kernels). You also need a silicone microwave popcorn bowl. W&P makes two: The Popper (a larger bowl that holds around 9 cups of popcorn) and the personal-sized Popper (a smaller bowl that makes around 4 cups of popcorn). As a single person, the Popper is the perfect size for my snacking needs.

The Popper is a small, soft silicone bowl with a vented lid. On the lid itself is a slight indentation, which cleverly holds exactly the amount of popcorn kernels that will fit, popped, within the bowl (so that I don’t have to use a measuring cup). Once I’ve poured the right increment into my bowl, I stick on its lid, put it in the microwave for about two minutes, and presto, I have fresh popcorn that snugly fits inside my bowl. One of my favorite parts of the bowl is that it’s collapsible (dishwasher-safe, too). When I’m done using it, I fold it down and stick it in the crevice next to my microwave, which is so much more efficient than bulky boxes and bags. Genius.

My other favorite part? Toppings! I am a toppings queen! Right now, my go-to move is to drizzle the popped popcorn with EVOO, shake on salt and pepper, grated parmesan, and dried rosemary. If I’m feeling fancy, I add a dash of truffle oil, nutritional yeast, or togarashi chili pepper powder for heat. But listen, you can get as creative as you want. There are all sorts of popcorn recipes, from savory (pesto, anyone?) to sweet (melted chocolate chips; maple syrup with bacon bits). You can use other types of oils or melted butter and as much or as little of any topping you want. Hell, have your friends over for a movie night and make a popcorn toppings bar (I just thought of this, but now I’m doing it).

Thank you, W&P, for my microwave popcorn popper, which ensures my snacking never gets boring, saves money, generates less paper waste, and is probably a far healthier snack than some of what I was eating before. This useful gift is just what I needed for the days when I’m craving an afternoon snack or nibble to pair with Netflix. I highly encourage you to add this little popper pal to your cart, but don’t forget dental floss, too.
