Ford’s Electric Pikes Peak Race Truck Generates Three Tons of Downforce

Ford is making a return to Pikes Peak with a new electric pickup truck that has been generating a lot of buzz. The “EV demonstrator” has been teased by the automaker since March, but now Ford has given us a full look at the truck, revealing that it can generate an impressive 6,000 pounds of downforce at 150 miles per hour. This is achieved through the truck’s wild aerodynamics, including a massive goose-neck wing, a wide front splitter, outlets behind the front wheels, and a massive rear diffuser. The SuperTruck Demonstrator was developed in partnership with STARD and has some styling similarities to the SuperVan 4.2 that Ford campaigned in last year’s hillclimb event. Ford has not provided many details about the electric SuperTruck so far, but it could have a triple-motor setup similar to the SuperVan 4.2’s 1,400 horsepower setup.

This is not the first electric demonstrator that Ford has released. Earlier this year, the company unveiled the F-150 Switchgear, built in collaboration with RTR. This electric pickup was based on the production Lightning platform and enhanced with off-road capabilities such as skid plates, composite body panels, and a new suspension. Ford will likely continue to tease the new electric pickup leading up to the Pikes Peak event, which will take place on June 23rd. More details about the truck are expected to be revealed before it runs up the famous hill, with Romain Dumas, the current Pikes Peak International Hill Climb record holder, set to pilot the Ford. Ford won’t be the only automaker showcasing an electric vehicle at the event, as a modified Hyundai Ioniq 5 will also be tackling the hillclimb course in June.

The SuperTruck Demonstrator’s impressive downforce generation at high speeds is a result of its unique aerodynamics design, which includes a massive goose-neck wing, a wide front splitter, outlets behind the front wheels, and a massive rear diffuser. The truck’s low-slung design and aggressive aero kit are reminiscent of the SuperVan 4.2 that Ford campaigned in last year’s hillclimb event, which also featured a massive wing and an aggressive aero kit to keep it planted through the course’s 156 turns. The SuperTruck Demonstrator’s aerodynamics were developed in partnership with STARD, and it will be interesting to see how this design translates to performance on the challenging Pikes Peak course.

With its wild aerodynamics and potential for high power figures, the Ford SuperTruck Demonstrator promises to be a standout contender at the 102nd running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.
