Boxing: The singer does not know the text of the national anthem

The hits were right, the text wasn’t….

English WBO cruiserweight champion Lawrence Okolie (30) defended his title for the third time at the weekend with a unanimous points victory over New Zealander David Light (31).

Bad for Light: He didn’t have a serious chance of winning against the 1.96 meter tall Englishman – and even before the fight in Manchester things didn’t go as planned.

Observant boxing fans noticed that the singer had to hand-read the lyrics to the national anthem of New Zealand before the fight.

Traditionally, the national anthems of the two fighters are sung before the fight. But when the singer started the national anthem of New Zealand, she first looked at her hand – for many fans a clear sign that she had written down the lyrics of the anthem there.

The obvious trick didn’t go unnoticed by boxing fans, of course. One Twitter user immediately asked, “Did this singer read the national anthem off her hand?”

Another user also wondered: “Does this singer read the text of the national anthem from her hand or am I wrong?”

Another Box fan wrote: “That awkward moment on live TV when you forget the first line of the national anthem and have to read it off your hand.”
