A charter bus with members of a Long Island high school band crashed off a New York highway, sending the vehicle careening down an embankment off the side of the busy roadway, officials said.

The crash occurred early Thursday afternoon on I-84 near the Orange County town of Wawayanda, though it was not immediately clear what led up to or caused the incident. New York State Police confirmed the westbound lanes of the highway were closed at exit 15 for an accident investigation.

Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus said that 50 people were aboard the bus at the time it rolled over, including members of the Farmingdale High School band, according to officials from the Long Island school. The bus was heading to Greeley, Pennsylvania, for a band camp, officials said.

The number and severity of injuries to those on board was not known.

Police said that there were at the scene, but did not provide any other details at this time.
