Taco gets new enclosure

Cologne – Black rhino Taco rejoices. The bull will get a completely new area at the zoo by the middle of next year – and a new bride.

The new facility is diagonally opposite his previous home in the “Old Elephant House”. In return, the zoo gives the bison and musk oxen to other German zoos.

Musk oxen still live here. They will be relocated from Cologne to another zoo. In autumn, the renovation of the historic Swiss log houses and the conversion into a new rhino enclosure will begin

At 3,000 square meters, the new site for Taco will be twice as large as before and will be renovated at a cost of around two million euros. The project was launched on Thursday by the Zoo Friends’ Association with a donation of 125,000 euros.

The conversion also includes the renovation of the historic Swiss log houses as a new rhino quarter. Taco can choose which one he wants to live in.

Zoo director Theo Pagel promised: “Next year after the inauguration of the new facility, Taco will also have a female again.”

Taco’s relocation is part of the zoo’s grand master plan. An animal landscape like that in the African savannah is to be created here. This means that the neighboring giraffe enclosure will also be expanded. And the antelopes can switch back and forth between the two enclosures.

Cologne Zoo is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission: 23 euros (adults), 11 euros (children), 17 euros (concessions)
