Cruelty to animals in Oelde: horses maltreated with shovel and fork

Published

Oelde – The man in the wool hat closes the barn door. The young mare (2) is helplessly tied to the wall with a short rope. Then the man grabs his shovel and starts thrashing!

The police and veterinary office in Warendorf are dealing with a shocking case of animal abuse. Horses are said to have been tortured and mistreated in a sadistic way at a well-kept riding stable in Oelde. This emerges from videos from a camera secretly installed in the barn. “We are assuming blatant violations of the Animal Welfare Act and have secured 15 horses on the farm,” says district spokesman Felix Höltmann (37).

The scene of the crime is a farm in the small town of Lette. Rudolf R. (61) has been breeding horses there for decades and also offers stables for horses. A rider who was regularly on the farm noticed behavioral problems in some of the horses for some time. In December 2022, she installed a camera. And produced such horrific images:

Several videos show how Rudolf R. abused various tied horses with a shovel or dung fork in the stable. There are also pictures of horses having their heads fastened to their chests with leather straps. A photo shows an apparently strangled horse lying dead on the stable floor.

When the rider presented the evidence to the veterinary office, the authorities reacted immediately. With the support of the police, 15 horses were picked up and housed at other horse farms. Criminal charges were filed against Rudolf R. and a provisional ban on keeping animals was issued. Three hunting rifles were also seized.

Speechlessness reigns in equestrian circles. Rudolf R. was a successful dressage rider and respected horse breeder for many years. Why he tortured the animals in such a barbaric way is unclear. He did not want to speak to BILD.
