D.C.-area forecast: A less blustery chill today before temperatures rebound

A somewhat subjective rating of the day’s weather, on a scale of 0 to 10.

5/10: Chilly teens and 20s this morning as temperatures remain about the same as yesterday. But the wind is kinder and gentler.

  • Today: Partly to mostly sunny, cold, less windy. Highs: Upper 30s to low 40s.
  • Tonight: Mostly clear, still chilly. Lows: 20s.
  • Tomorrow: Mostly sunny, warmer. Highs: Low to mid-50s.

Our average high this time of year is in the low 50s. So yesterday’s low 40s and wind chills in the 20s at times were unseasonably chilly. Temperatures run about the same today, but feel a bit warmer thanks to less wind. We’ll rebound to near and above 50 starting tomorrow, and could even hit 60 this weekend. Showers are possible Friday, and again Saturday night into Sunday.

Today (Wednesday): From the chilly teens and 20s this morning, temperatures manage only the upper 30s to low 40s this afternoon despite mostly sunny skies. The wind, however, is much more forgiving than yesterday. Breezes come from the southwest around 10 mph — that’s still enough for a few degrees of wind chill — with some gusts near 20 mph. Confidence: High

Tonight: A light breeze from the southwest starts to bring in a milder air mass. But low temperatures are still rather chilly, ranging through the 20s under mostly clear skies. Should be another nice view of the waning beaver moon and Jupiter in the eastern sky this evening. Confidence: High

Tomorrow (Thursday): After another bundle-up kind of morning, cold-weather haters can breathe a sigh of relief by afternoon, as mostly sunny skies help lift highs to the low to mid-50s. Winds are mainly light from the south. Confidence: High

Tomorrow night: Becoming partly cloudy and not as cold, with lows in the 30s and light winds. Confidence: High

Mostly cloudy Friday, and maybe a touch cooler with highs in the upper 40s to low 50s. Some showers are possible late morning into evening as low pressure passes by to our west. Doesn’t look like anything too steady or heavy as of now. Shower chances diminish by late Friday evening with overnight lows in the upper 30s to low 40s. Confidence: Medium

Partly to mostly cloudy Saturday, but only a small chance of a shower, with warmer highs in the mid-50s to low 60s. Saturday night into Sunday could bring another chance of rain depending on how close to the Mid-Atlantic coast a storm system develops. Highs on Sunday should be in the 50s to near 60. Confidence: Low-Medium
