D.C.-area forecast: A pleasantly warm workweek before a crisp autumn weekend

Published

on

A somewhat subjective rating of the day’s weather, on a scale of 0 to 10.

9/10: Comfortably warm; some might quibble with the lack of crispness, considering it’s October.

  • Today: Mostly sunny. Highs: 79 to 83.
  • Tonight: Clear skies. Lows: 56 to 61.
  • Tomorrow: Mostly sunny. Highs: 80 to 84.

While warmer than normal, the next several days are tough to top, boasting sunshine and highs in the low 80s. We will see a cool front sweep through Friday into Saturday, ending the warm weather regime and introducing our first stretch of real autumn-like weather. Any rain with the front will be pretty light, so drought issues in our western areas will not improve.

Today (Monday): It will be cool and refreshing when you get up and head out but almost toasty by early afternoon — especially if you’re in the sun. Highs make the low 80s in most spots. Humidity is moderate with dew points around 60. With winds from the northeast only 5 to 10 mph, there won’t be much breeze to cool you off. Confidence: High

Tonight: Skies are clear, winds are calm, and temperatures steadily fall. Lows range from the mid-50s in our cooler locations to the low 60s downtown. Some patchy fog cannot be ruled out. Confidence: High

Tomorrow (Tuesday): It’s more or less a carbon copy of today. Any early fog burns off quickly, with abundant sunshine and highs mostly in the low 80s. Breezes are gentle from the north around 5 to 10 mph. Confidence: High

Tomorrow night: Under clear skies and calm winds, lows settle within a few degrees of 60 in most spots. A little fog is possible late at night. Confidence: High

We keep the warm sunshine around Wednesday and Thursday, enjoying highs within a few degrees of 80. Thursday may be a tad cooler than Wednesday as light winds come in from the northeast and we may see some more clouds. Lows Wednesday and Thursday nights are both pretty close to 60. Confidence: Medium-High

Clouds increase Friday, and showers are a good bet as the cold front comes through — probably into Friday night. Highs Friday reach well into the 70s before dropping into the 50s toward Saturday morning. Confidence: Medium-High

If you enjoy cool, crisp autumn weather, the upcoming weekend is for you. Highs both days are only in the 60s — despite sunny skies. Lows Saturday night drop into the chilly 40s throughout much of the region. Confidence: Medium-High
