NEW YORK — A Bronx man was charged with murder after his 3-month-old daughter was found dead in a wooded area near the Major Deegan Expressway.

Police arrested Damion Comager, 23, after the body of Genevieve Comanger was discovered steps from a pedestrian overpass at West 161st Street at around 10:30 p.m. Sunday.

Comager was charged with murder, manslaughter and concealment of a human corpse.

Sources told CBS2 the baby girl and her parents had a room at a transition housing shelter on University Avenue.

Police said they received a tip from a relative concerned about the baby girl’s welfare. In response, detectives went to the shelter and took the girl’s parents in for questioning.

Sources said that’s how investigators learned the location of the body. It was not immediately clear if the baby was alive when she was left in the woods or died sometime before.

Neighbors expressed sorrow and anger after hearing about the baby’s death.

“I’m a mother and it’s scary just to think about it,” said Gabriella Cunalata.

“I have grandchildren, and it saddens me,” said Gil Velez, of Highbridge. “This baby could have been somebody special.”

Autopsy results on the baby’s cause of death were pending.
