Kristen Stewart and Lucy Boynton put on stylish displays as they led the star-studded guest list at the Chanel Metiers d’Art show in Manchester on Thursday.

Famous faces descended upon Thomas Street in Manchester as Chanel brought its Métiers d’Art show to the north of England despite uproar from locals who defied police orders not to disrupt the event.

Keeping in line with the French fashion house’s creations, Kristen, 33, cut an edgy figure in a black and white tweed dress with a low neckline and a voluminous skirt.

She completed her trendy ensemble with a pair of chunky black boots and array of chunky silver jewellery as she added her own flare to the look.

Kristen styled her choppy brunette tresses in a long fringe falling over her stunning features and added a pop of colour with a bold red lip.

Thomas Street in Manchester’s Northern Quarter was transformed for the prestigious fashion event as runway models strutted down the road, covered from the rain by a metal structure, while A-list guests lined the pavements.

For the night, actress Jenna Coleman put on a glamorous display in a brown tweed jacket with black lapels and a tie belt, which she styled with black heels.

Tilda Swinton, 63, cut a sophisticated figure in a white shirt and a tweed jacket as she posed up a storm at the event.

Alexa Chung looked as glamorous as ever in a smart black and white dress, which she paired with a scarf and knee-high black boots.

The model, 40, toted her essentials in a small black handbag with a gold chain strap and kept her accessories simple for the event.

Hugh Grant also cut a dapper figure as he stepped out at the event hand-in-hand with his elegant wife Anna Elisabet Eberstein, who he married in 2018.

Also among the guest list were the likes of Liam Gallagher’s sons Lennon and Gene, Laura Bailey and rapper Aitch.

In recent years, celebrity regulars at the Metiers d’Art have included Pharrell Williams, Lily-Rose Depp and Kristen, and this year, the A-list guests have descended on Manchester amid uproar from locals.

Manchester locals defied police orders not to disrupt the much-anticipated Chanel catwalk, holding a pro-Palestine rally outside and blaring karaoke from nearby pubs.

Those living on Thomas Street had been asked by the French fashion house to dim their lights not to walk on their balconies while models strutted down the runway.

But as celebrities gathered under the temporary canopy for the glitzy event, just metres away protesters chanted ‘Free Palestine’ and waved flags as they called for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza strip.

Steps away, punters also gathered into the nearby Millstone Pub wearing Father Christmas hats and blasting the Lady in Red, pushing back pints.

Others mocked the show for choosing the rainiest city in the UK for its Métiers d’Art Christmas show, with one writing on social media: ‘Manchester is inevitably also experiencing a biblical rain at the event.’

Another added: ‘Pleased to see the Manchester weather is delievering the real deal for Chanel: p***ing rain’. Though it be December, hardly surprising.’

As the after-party got underway at the Victoria Baths on the other side of the city, neighbours gathered on the street, with one woman wearing a dressing gown reportedly shouting ‘what the hell is going on?’.

The city council previously announced that a number of roads, including the high street between Copperas Street and Nicholas Croft, would be closed for most of the night ‘for an event in the Northern Quarter’.

A street in the northern quarter of the city has been cordoned off for the international catwalk and was closed for around a month ahead of the show.

Large metal structures were erected on Thomas Street with cranes and constructors on the scene to build a warehouse-like frame.

The venue and details of the Métiers d’Art catwalk were kept a tightly-guarded secret – but according to local media earlier this month, dozens of boxes with the show’s name emblazoned upon were seen in the same area.

Businesses in the immediate vicinity signed non-disclosure agreements to prevent them speaking about the event, Manchester Evening News reported.

One business owner said they are having to close their doors on December 6 and 7, but they are being compensated for it. ‘It must be costing them a fortune,’ they added.

Ahead of the show, residents living on Thomas Street expressed their fury at being asked by the luxury designer to dim their lights and not walk out onto their balconies while models take to the catwalk.

Business owners on the street have also expressed concerns over profit after Chanel paid them to shut for the day – but they fear the reimbursement will not cover the losses they will suffer from missing out on a day’s custom.

One business, a sex shop on the street, has also taken the opportunity to mercilessly mock Chanel and one of the show’s rumoured attendees, Kim Kardashian – joking that they stock the infamous sex tape she made with her ex boyfriend.

As backlash built against Chanel, one resident said: ‘We were told not to go on our balconies and to keep our curtains shut during the show. It was more or less: ‘We strongly suggest you don’t go on your balcony or if you have lights on in your home close the curtain.’

He said he began receiving letters about the fashion show around three weeks ago.

‘We’ve had a handful of letters which have been like a drip feed of information because they want to keep it on the down low even though everyone knows it’s a Chanel show’, he added.

Within the letters he says event dates were given and residents were warned the area was set to become ‘very active’ from Monday, December 4.

Previous themes for the event have included ancient Egypt, Scotland and the 1960s – but this year’s theme has not yet been announced.

Chanel’s show, which has previously been held in ‘fashion capital’ cities like London and Paris, is being held in Manchester this year due to its cultural links.

The Chanel website describes the city in the north west as, ‘one of the most effervescent cities of pop culture and an avant-garde one, whose bands, spanning all genres, have changed the history of music.’

In September, fashion exhibition Gabrielle Chanel. Fashion Manifesto – dedicated to the designer who established the luxury fashion house – opened at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

In the past, Chanel has chosen other UK cities for its collections including Linlithgow Palace near Edinburgh, Scotland, in 2012.
