Technology: Jena start-up develops contactless finger scanners

Jena (Thuringia) – The papillary lines on the fingertip of each person are unique. But the fingerprint, which revolutionized criminalistics 130 years ago and is now an integral part of biometric security technology, could soon be obsolete…

Reason: The start-up “IDloop” from Jena, founded in 2021, has now developed the fingerprint without a print! Your fingerprint (print) scanner works contactless, should help authorities in the future with official identification and look at people’s fingers down to the micrometer …

The patent-pending 3D scanner (15x15x15 cm in size) works in a unique way: holding your hand briefly over the optics, the software calculates 2D grayscale images from the scanned 3D point cloud (500 ppi) using an algorithm and in real time.

“These 2D images correspond to the classic fingerprint and are necessary in order to be compatible with the standards of the official databases,” says product developer Dr. Tom Michalsky (36). This includes around three billion people worldwide.

“Clean” scan: Contactless (e.g. for passenger handling at the airport) is not only faster, but also more hygienic – there is no longer any need to touch the surface of the scanner. In addition, the smart scanner is forgery-proof, detects dead tissue and even a layer of latex over the finger!

Co-founder Philipp Riehl (34): “The USA were and are pioneers in the field of biometrics technology. We want and can change that with our scanner.”

The EU has now apparently also recognized this potential and is funding the further development of the “IDloop” invention until it is ready for the market with 10 million euros from the pot of the European Innovation Council (EIC).

In the Technology and Innovation Park Jena is therefore constantly working on the “Revision 1” of the finger scanner.

Things will get serious in 2024, when the prototypes that have been certified by then are to be tested at the first airport terminals.
