Wermelskirchen (NRW) – Cap? No. leggings? Fine with skirt over it. But sweatpants?
DOESN’T WORK AT ALL.
A strict dress code has been enforced at the secondary school in Wermelskirchen (NRW) since last week: plunging necklines are prohibited, as are cropped clothing and jogging pants. Anyone who still shows up in class in Schluffi style can leave immediately.

This causes horror – among the parents! “Then I get a call from school at work and I’m informed that my children have been sent home,” says Daniel Thomas.Rheinische Post“. His children (13 and 16 years old) were kicked out. And they are by no means the only ones: Till and Eric (both 15) were expelled from the classroom on Thursday. Announcement: “Move, then come back!”

BILD visited the school on Wednesday and met Chiara (16) from the 10c – in a cropped shirt. well? Chiara very cool: “I always dress with my stomach bare. I don’t care what the teachers say about it. Clothing has nothing to do with how well you study. It’s not meant to be disrespectful to the teachers, it’s just my style.”

Aylin (16) from the parallel class protests against the new rule: “I wear my sweatpants quite often to school. A bit out of provocation today. Whether you get into trouble because of that also depends on the teacher. If I were kicked out, I would definitely tell the teacher that I find it ridiculous. So far, nobody has asked me about the sweatpants.”
School relies on educational mission
In a letter to parents (available to BILD), the school refers to its “educational mandate” and “preparation for life in public and in working life”.

Exaggerated and not contemporary
That doesn’t go down well with all parents. Michael Urbahn (36) to BILD: “In my opinion, the school wants to distract from the lack of teachers, there are almost daily cancellations of lessons.” According to Urbahn, this ban has existed for a long time. But that would never have interested anyone. It was only after Corona, when the children went back to school, that it suddenly became an issue – “allegedly because the children let themselves go when it came to clothing”.
His daughter (13) also loves sweatpants. The father: “I find this ban totally excessive and not up to date.”

The school did not want to comment on BILD’s request, but is sticking to the dress code.
