World Cup 2022: A little more sports school – less luxury hotel for the DFB stars!

When processing the German WM– Bankruptcy in Qatar terms such as “oasis of well-being” or “holiday feeling” are used. The players’ wives were in the quarters several times and took their selfies by the pool.

I just looked at the staff, i.e. the employees who buzzed around the team in Qatar. The list does not claim to be complete.

2 assistant coaches, 2 goalkeeper coaches, 1 standard coach, 2 athletic coaches, 1 assistant coach systemic match analysis, 1 match analyst, 2 data analysts, 2 team doctors, 3 physiotherapists, 1 sports psychologist. 3 cooks, 2 kit wardens, 1 bus driver, 1 driver, 4 employees responsible for management, 1 press officer, 6 media/TV employees, 1 travel agency employee, 1 team photographer, 1 security employee, 1 service employee.

I can not judge whether all this is necessary. But if there is talk of an “oasis of well-being” (to me also of high DFB officials), then you have to at least talk about it.

In 1974 the later world champions (2:1 against Holland) still had their quarters in the Malente sports school. Later, the location in Schleswig-Holstein was used as a training camp for preparation.

In 1990 I was in a room at Beckenbauer. Tiny. A bed against the wall, 80 cm wide. A desk and a chair by the window. The small bathroom had a narrow shower, sink and toilet. Did it bother you? They later became world champions anyway.

I don’t want to send anyone to Malente! The times have changed. And there probably wouldn’t be enough space in the sports school for the many players, coaches and supervisors.

But a little more sports school and a little less luxury hotel would do our team good. I am convinced of that.

For me, Fredi Bobic would be a very good successor to Oliver Bierhoff.

He could! However, it depends on the job description. If he is primarily responsible for the organization and processes, then he would be better off staying in Berlin. In the absence of a sports director, he would also have to take care of the 56 youth performance centers (NLZ) throughout Germany and reorganize the promotion of talent. So that we finally get a real centre-forward again. And the great talents are not only growing up in England, France, Spain and Portugal.

Now we’ve hacked around enough at the World Cup in Qatar. Now maybe we can say something positive. At best, it opens our horizons a little. If we grumble about a World Cup in winter, we might realize that many other nations have only known World Cups in winter for decades. In South America, Australia and parts of Africa.

And even if it’s not quite as cold there in winter as it is here, we should still think about whether we’re not looking at the football world too much from a European perspective.
