Nissan has issued a warning to owners of older vehicles with unrepaired Takata airbags, advising them to stop driving immediately. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced that this “Do Not Drive” alert applies to 83,920 cars, including certain models of Nissan Sentra, Pathfinder, and Infiniti QX4 vehicles. The stock of Nissan dropped around 3% following this warning. The NHTSA is urging all vehicle owners to check for open Takata airbag recalls and to refrain from driving their vehicles until the defective airbag is replaced.

Nissan and Infiniti will provide affected owners with free towing and mobile repair services, as well as loaner cars in select locations. The age of the vehicles with the defective Takata airbag inflators poses an increased risk of explosion during airbag deployment, potentially causing serious injury or death. In the United States, 27 fatalities and numerous injuries have been linked to defective Takata airbags. The NHTSA reports that 67 million Takata airbag inflators have been recalled in the country, with over 100 million recalled worldwide, marking one of the largest auto safety recalls in history.

In 2017, Takata filed for bankruptcy protection in Japan and the U.S. after agreeing to pay $1 billion in criminal penalties related to alleged fraudulent conduct in the sales of its defective airbag inflators. The severity and scale of the Takata airbag recall highlights the importance of addressing safety issues promptly and thoroughly in the automotive industry. With the offer of free towing, mobile repair, and loaner cars, Nissan and Infiniti are taking steps to ensure the safety of affected vehicle owners while addressing the risks associated with unrepaired Takata airbags. It is crucial for owners of older Nissan and Infiniti vehicles to check for open recalls and follow safety recommendations to prevent potential harm.
