Russia-Ukraine War: Recap of Major Events on Day 828

The ongoing war in Ukraine has reached its 828th day, with the country facing continued attacks from Russian forces. In the latest developments on Sunday, June 2, 2024, Ukraine’s air defence systems successfully destroyed 24 out of 25 attack drones launched by Russia overnight. Additionally, Russia launched an Iskander-K cruise missile towards Ukraine’s Kharkiv region, causing damage. Ukrainian prosecutors reported that a Russian missile hit residences in Balakliya, injuring 13 people, including eight children, and destroying homes.

On the diplomatic front, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy discussed Kyiv’s defence needs with US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin at the Shangri-la dialogue in Singapore. Zelenskyy also announced that 106 countries and organizations have agreed to participate in a summit in Switzerland in mid-June aimed at bringing peace to Ukraine. However, he expressed disappointment at some world leaders who confirmed their attendance at the conference but did not offer their support. China’s defence minister stated that Beijing remains committed to peace in a responsible manner without supporting either Russia or Ukraine.

In terms of military assistance, Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to countries such as the United States, Germany, and the Netherlands for their support, particularly with air defence systems. The support from these countries, along with discussions regarding Ukraine’s bid to join the European Union, are key topics in the upcoming EU Parliament elections taking place from June 6-9. The military and weapons support for Ukraine are crucial in the ongoing conflict with Russia.

The situation in Ukraine remains dire as the war continues, with both military and diplomatic efforts being made to bring an end to the conflict. Despite the destruction caused by Russian attacks, Ukraine’s air defence systems have been successful in intercepting and destroying incoming threats. President Zelenskyy’s discussions with world leaders and the upcoming summit in Switzerland are aimed at finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict and bringing stability to the war-torn nation.

As the conflict in Ukraine progresses, the support from countries like the United States, Germany, and the Netherlands is crucial in providing Ukraine with the necessary military assistance to defend itself against Russian aggression. The ongoing discussions regarding Ukraine’s bid to join the European Union are also significant, as they could potentially lead to stronger ties with Western nations and further support in the conflict. The upcoming EU Parliament elections will be a key determinant in shaping the future of Ukraine’s relationship with the EU and the level of military assistance it receives.
