BAYERN MUNICH were stunned by Borussia Monchengladbach as the Bundesliga champions relinquished a first half lead to lose 2-1 at the Allianz Arena.

Bayern remain nine points clear at the top of the Bundesliga table, but second place Borussia Dortmund do now have a game in hand.

Monchengladbach move up to 11th place and are now just six points off a Champions League spot.

It all seemed to be going according to plan when Robert Lewandowski netted his first goal of 2022 in the 18th minute.

The 33-year-old Polish striker, who now has 31 goals in 26 games for Bayern so far this season, took on Thomas Muller’s pass before drilling his effort past Yann Sommer at the near post.

The hosts looked to be in total control but shortly before the half hour mark Monchengladbach suddenly drew level.

Joshua Kimmich failed to clear his lines and midfielder Florian Neuhaus made the German champions pay by firing in between the legs of Sven Ulreich.

And things got even better for the visitors just four minutes later when they stunned the Allianz Arena with a second goal.

It ultimately turned into a disappointing night for Lewandowski

Stefan Lainer climbed highest at a corner and was able to power his header through the fingertips of Ulreich.

The home side pressed for an equaliser in the second half but Monchengladbach stood firm as they began to believe they could secure a first league win away at Bayern since 2018.

And they got exactly what they deserved, adding to the 5-0 drubbing they gave Julian Nagelsmann’s team earlier on in the campaign in the DFB Pokal.

The loss on Friday night was Bayern’s third league loss of the season and only the fourth time in 18 matches that they have failed to win.

The result also ends a run of more than three months without a defeat at home.
