Rose told he is not FIT ENOUGH by Watford boss as Ranieri aims to help star

DANNY ROSE has taken some heavy blows on and off the pitch since joining Watford in the summer.

And now the 31-year-old has been told he is still unfit well into the campaign by boss Claudio Ranieri – as the Italian coach attempts to rediscover the defender’s glory days for club and country.

Experienced Prem star Rose was rated as one of England’s top full-backs under the eyes of Mauricio Pochettino at Spurs as they fought for titles and played in Europe.

He also impressed Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate, representing his country at the 2018 World Cup as they reached the semi-finals.

Back then, Rose was seen as the original modern left-back – powerful, overlapping runs with an eye for an assist as well as a tenacity in defence.

But now, as Rose enters the twilight years of his career with the Hornets, he has been hit with criticism left, right and centre for his lacklustre displays.

Error-strewn performances against Liverpool, Arsenal and most recently Manchester City are stand-outs – games in previous years where he would normally shine.

Ranieri arrived back in October – taking the place of axed boss Xisco Munoz – and is a manager known for his discipline and strict fitness regimes.

But the 70-year-old is still unhappy with Rose’s own fitness, explaining: “I am very confident with him but he has to improve more.

“I remember Danny when he played at Tottenham and the England national team and I need this Danny.

“I think it is more fitness than a confidence issue. When he came he was down on fitness and now he has improved a lot but he needs to improve more.

“It is difficult though to say how long that will take.”

Rose has also been subject to heavy criticism by pundits and fans alike – with many expecting the defender’s arrival to give the club a solidity that is desperately needed if they are to stand a chance of surviving in the top flight this campaign.
