TEAMS at the World Cup are now desperately trying to qualify for the last-16 as they face their final group games.
While the likes of France, England, Brazil and Argentina were considered favourites for the tournament, it has been a mixed bag so far.
Lionel Messi’s side, who went into Qatar as favourites, suffered a shock defeat to Saudi Arabia on the first game, putting their place at risk – but Argentina won their second game.
They are yet to qualify, but let’s have a look at who has already made it into the next round with a game to spare.
Which teams have qualified for the last-16?
Group A
Netherlands secured their place in the last-16 with a 2-0 victory over hosts Qatar, seeing Louis Van Gaal’s side finish top of the group.
Senegal also confirmed their place in the knock-out rounds after beating Ecuador.
Both sides will learn their opponents TONIGHT as Group B finalises, with Senegal facing the winners and the Netherlands facing the runners up.
Group B
England qualified for the last-16, coming out 3-0 victors over Wales to send their fellow Brits home.
USA are joining the Three Lions in the knockout rounds, beating Iran 1-0 to set up a clash with the Netherlands.
Group C
Argentina finished top of Group C despite losing their first match of the group stage.
Victory over Mexico and Poland saw them progress into the last-16, while they are joined by the Europeans.
Poland finished above Mexico by the skin of their teeth, having a superior goal difference to the Central Americans.
Group D
France had already qualified before facing Tunisia – and then the reigning world champions LOST.
Needless to say Les Bleus still finished top of the group on goal difference.
They are joined in the last 16 by Australia, who pulled another 1-0 victory out of their pockets with a win over disappointing Denmark.
Group E
It is all to play for going into the final match in Group E, with Germany surprisingly sitting bottom.
Defeat to Japan saw their World Cup dreams put into doubt but a draw with Spain and Costa Rica beating Japan means that they can still make it through, and Spain could still fall out of the group despite sitting top.
- Japan vs Spain (Thursday, 7pm)
- Costa Rica vs Germany (Thursday, 7pm)
Group F
No team has qualified for the last-16 from Group F but Canada are out.
Croatia sit top on four points, the same as Morocco, and they face Belgium, who are third on three points, on the final day.
If Morocco beat Canada, they will seal their place in the last-16 and Belgium must beat Croatia to go through.
