Subaru Details the Advantages of Its New Hybrid Boxer Engine



Automakers are continuously exploring ways to reduce carbon emissions and increase fuel efficiency. Toyota, Mazda, and Subaru recently collaborated on a joint conference to unveil their strategies for achieving decarbonization without relying solely on electric vehicles. Toyota is developing smaller and more efficient engines, while Mazda is focusing on single and two-rotor engines. Subaru, on the other hand, is innovating its horizontally opposed engine in a next-generation hybrid system. They showcased a prototype of their electrified boxer inside a camouflaged Crosstrek prototype, highlighting a new series-parallel layout that aims to improve fuel economy and packaging.

Subaru’s new hybrid boxer engine offers numerous benefits in terms of fuel economy and packaging. By housing the engine, hybrid system, transmission, and transfer case together, and relocating the power control unit to the engine bay, they have been able to maintain a larger gas tank for an extended range. This new system aims to resolve current weaknesses in fuel efficiency and create a “very long cruising distance.” Despite acknowledging that horizontally opposed engines may not always be the most efficient, Subaru is committed to preserving their signature engine layout that sets them apart in the market. Toyota, Porsche, and Mazda also have their unique engine configurations, but Subaru plans to begin production of its next-gen hybrid boxer engine this fall at a factory in Japan for all-wheel-drive applications.

In addition to their innovative hybrid system, Subaru is also collaborating with Toyota and Mazda on carbon-neutral fuels. They are set to enter a High Performance X Future Concept in the Super Taikyu racing series based on the WRX model. Mazda, known for its rotary engines, is taking a different approach with the revival of its engine in the MX-30 crossover. The rotary engine in this model serves as a generator for the battery, with an electric motor powering the wheels. Mazda is exploring a new layout for a two-rotor engine that could potentially be used in a future sports car, including a potential reboot of the RX7 model.

Overall, automakers are striving to find innovative solutions to reduce carbon emissions and improve fuel efficiency without fully transitioning to electric vehicles. Subaru’s new hybrid boxer engine and collaboration on carbon-neutral fuels reflect their commitment to sustainability and technological advancement in the automotive industry.
