The BMW Skytop Concept Resembles an 8 Series With a Targa Top

BMW has recently unveiled the Skytop Concept, a stunning two-seater coupe without a roof, at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este. This unique design takes inspiration from past BMW models such as the Z8 and 503, combining driving dynamics and elegance at the highest level. The Skytop features design elements like thin taillights, a sharknose front end, and a flat-decked rear end reminiscent of its predecessors. It uses the powerful 617-horsepower 4.4-liter V-8 engine from the M8 Competition, with technical and performance specs likely similar to the M8.

At first glance, the Skytop may appear to be a rebodied 8 Series, sharing similar proportions and design cues. The interior also resembles the 8 Series, with a digital gauge cluster, infotainment screen, center stack, and production-based seats and steering wheel. However, the unique roll bar behind the seats and power-retractable window add a bespoke touch to the concept. The two-piece roof can be manually removed and stowed in the trunk, giving the Skytop a convertible-like feel.

While the Skytop Concept showcases BMW’s design and engineering prowess, it is unlikely to ever see production. With BMW’s existing lineup of the 8 Series coupe and convertible, introducing a targa version could potentially cannibalize sales. Despite its production-based elements, the concept’s futuristic and aesthetically pleasing design may serve as a hint of what’s to come in future BMW models. Overall, the Skytop Concept is a testament to BMW’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of automotive design and innovation.

In conclusion, the BMW Concept Skytop is a striking concept car that pays homage to BMW’s iconic past models while incorporating modern design elements and cutting-edge technology. Its combination of elegance, performance, and unique features make it a standout in the world of concept cars. While it may never see production, the Skytop Concept serves as a glimpse into BMW’s future design direction and capabilities. With its bold styling, powerful engine, and innovative features, the Skytop Concept is a true representation of BMW’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of automotive design and engineering.
