Many companies are shifting towards a new form of hiring that prioritizes skills over traditional metrics like education and years of experience. Data from job site Indeed shows that the share of U.S. online job postings requiring employment tenure has fallen by 10 percentage points in the past two years. In addition, 52% of job ads do not have a formal education requirement, up from 48% in 2019. Mentions of college degrees have decreased in 87% of occupational groups over time, indicating a shift towards skills-based hiring.

A recent survey by ZipRecruiter of 2,000 employers also highlights the trend towards skills-based hiring, where competencies are prioritized over traditional credentials. 45% of employers have eliminated degree requirements for some roles in the past year, and 72% now prioritize skills over certificates when hiring. The increased emphasis on practical skills and real-world experience over formal education seems to be gaining momentum in the job market.

Hiring managers are now providing more explicit details about the specific skills they are looking for in job ads, according to economist Cory Stahle from Indeed. The trend towards skills-based hiring is considered a “win-win” situation for both employers and job seekers. It allows for new career opportunities that were previously unavailable and results in higher retention rates among workers without college degrees, as well as significant salary increases for these candidates.

While traditional measures of job fit, such as education, will still be important for certain professions like surgeons, many employers are realizing that qualifications are not always a reliable indicator of job fit. Job seekers are advised to focus on developing and demonstrating the skills that are relevant to the positions they are applying for. However, it is also important to provide an accurate representation of work history and education on their resumes, as some hiring managers may still value these qualifications.

It is crucial for job seekers to be prepared for skills tests during the hiring process, as this practice varies among companies. Developing and showcasing the identified skills are essential steps for job seekers looking to succeed in a skills-based hiring environment. While there may be some limitations to this new approach, such as entrenched behaviors among hiring managers, the shift towards skills-based hiring presents new opportunities for job seekers to demonstrate their abilities and secure rewarding career opportunities.
