The Volvo EX90 EV Enters Production after Two-Year Delay



Volvo has finally begun production of the EX90, its first electric SUV that was unveiled nearly two years ago. The first model, finished in Denim Blue, has rolled off the assembly line at the automaker’s Charleston, South Carolina, factory and is set to be delivered to an American customer later this year. The company had initially planned to start deliveries in early 2024 but had to delay the launch due to software issues that needed to be resolved, a common problem that has affected many automakers.

The EX90 was introduced in November 2022 as Volvo’s new three-row electric flagship, joining the gas-powered XC90 in the company’s lineup. It is built on a new platform with a 111.0-kilowatt-hour battery, with the Twin Motor Performance trim boasting 509 horsepower and 671 pound-feet of torque. The SUV can accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 4.7 seconds. The entry-level Twin Motor trim, starting at $77,990, offers 402 hp and 568 lb-ft of torque, taking an additional second to reach 60 mph.

Volvo has equipped the EX90 with a range of sensors and technology, claiming it to be the safest model in its lineup. The SUV features an external 360-degree camera, five radar sensors, and 16 ultrasonic sensors to enhance awareness of the vehicle’s surroundings and help drivers react more quickly. Inside, a 14.5-inch center infotainment screen integrates Google apps and services. The EX90 is being produced alongside the S60 sedan at the company’s Charleston factory, which has a capacity of 150,000 cars per year in line with Volvo’s goal of selling 600,000 EVs by 2025.

The EX90’s production launch marks an important milestone for Volvo as it continues to expand its electric vehicle lineup and incorporate advanced technology and safety features into its vehicles. The SUV’s performance and capabilities position it as a competitive option in the growing market for electric SUVs, offering buyers a stylish and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional gas-powered vehicles.
