Unusual MLB London Series advertisement gains popularity for showcasing former Mets player

The New York Mets, despite their struggles, still have some star players like Pete Alonso, Francisco Lindor, and Starling Marte. However, a recent advertisement in England for their London Series game against the Philadelphia Phillies did not showcase these big names. Instead, the advertisement featured Phillies stars like Bryce Harper and Trea Turner, while the Mets were represented by three relievers, including Jake Reed who hasn’t played for the team since 2022.

In his nine appearances for the Mets in the 2021 and 2022 seasons, Jake Reed had a high ERA of 8.18 and was eventually designated for assignment in July 2022. Since then, he has had stints with the Dodgers, Orioles, and Dodgers again before becoming a free agent. Despite their lack of standout performances, the Mets’ roster does have some players delivering solid numbers, with Lindor leading the team in WAR followed by Harrison Bader and rookie Mark Vientos.

The Phillies, on the other hand, are currently leading the league with the best record and a stacked rotation, showcasing why they are 16.5 games ahead of the Mets. The stark difference in performance was evident during a recent game where the Phillies scored six runs in the fourth inning against the Mets. Despite winning five of their last seven games before heading to Europe, the Mets were reminded of the disparity between their team and the top-performing Phillies.

In addition to the on-field performance, off-field marketing efforts for the London Series also fell short for the Mets, with a Hawaiian shirt featuring both teams’ logos being widely criticized. The rivalry between the Mets and Phillies in the NL East added another layer of disappointment to the advertising mishap. Moving forward, the Mets will need to focus on improving their performance and showcasing their star players to regain their competitive edge in the league.
