29 Chill Songs for When You Just Need a Minute to Yourself

I’ll be the first to say it: I love the holidays! The food, the glitz, the parties, the gift-giving, the music, and of course, spending time with family and friends. But even as someone who thoroughly enjoys cozying up for a corny holiday movie or sipping a late night glass of wine around a fireplace, I also know this time of year can be… a lot. And we all deserve breaks to step away, recharge, and come back refreshed.

So that’s exactly the idea behind this week’s playlist. It’s an eclectic mix of music intended to calm you down and mellow you out when you’re in serious need of some solo time. Because here’s the thing: It’s totally OK to love your family dearly…and to love getting 10 minutes of peace and quiet in the midst of the chaos. So if you’re the type of person who thrives on “me time” after a day of close-knit overstimulation, this playlist is for you.

There’s a great mix of decades in here, including quiet jazz classics (“I Fall in Love Too Easily” by Chet Baker and “Solitude” by Billie Holiday) all the way up to modern tunes from Perfume Genius, Tennis, The 1975, and MUNA. You’ll also find a decent dose of indie from the aughts on this playlist—Iron and Wine, Death Cab for Cutie, and The Decemberists all have a track—plus dreamy beats from the likes of Angus and Julia Stone, The Postal Service, and Felix Snow.

No matter where you’re spending the holidays, I hope you have the chance to get outside at some point and go for a walk or ride—whether that’s a stroll around your block, or a leisurely trip to a nearby park where you can take in a little nature. Here’s to the holidays, done on your terms, exactly as you deserve.
