Beverly Ramos Shares the Products She Can’t Run a Marathon Without

For Beverly Ramos, running is all about resilience. Back in 2017, the elite runner was training for the New York City Marathon when Hurricane Maria devastated much of Puerto Rico, where Ramos grew up and where she lived at the time. Though she lost power and running water for months, she continued to train in hopes her strength would inspire others.

Ramos tapped into her sticktoitiveness once again when she was forced to marathon train on a treadmill at home for the first several months of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the obstacles, she managed to break her own Puerto Rican national marathon record at The Marathon Project in December 2020 (with a time of 2:33:09) and then again at the Xiamen Marathon in Italy this past April (2:32:43).

Ramos will be racing New York again this weekend on Team New Balance. Here, the pro walks us through her gear and apparel must-haves for marathon runners at any level. “There are three important things all first-time marathoners should have with them,” Ramos tells SELF. “Make sure that you have your shoes on. You need a GPS watch or tracking device, and definitely nutrition, so you have the energy to complete your goal.” For her favorite of each, read on below.
