FDA Recalls Various Cheeses Due to Listeria Concerns
Eight different kinds of cheeses are being recalled following reports they could be contaminated with listeria. The cheeses were made by Paris Brothers, Inc., in Kansas City, Missouri in May; they were distributed and sold in nine different states, according to a statement on the recall from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The administration is urging people to check any cheese they may have bought recently to see if it could be contaminated, since listeria can cause serious—sometimes fatal—infections for certain groups of people.
The recall occurred after a routine test by the FDA which led to the discovery of Listeria monocytogenes, the bacterium that causes listeria infection. The following products, which were sold May 4, 5, and 6, were affected, per the FDA statement:
- Cottonwood River Cheddar
- D’amir Brie Double Crème French Brie
- Milton Prairie Breeze White Cheddar Style
- Milton Tomato Garlic Cheddar
- Paris Brothers Mild Cheddar
- Paris Brothers Colby Jack
- Paris Brothers Pepper Jack
- Cervasi Pecorino Romano
They were sold at retailers in Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, Iowa, Oklahoma, Nebraska, South Dakota, Mississippi, and Florida. The affected products have the following lot codes: 05042022, 05052022, or 05062022. However, some retail outlets may have relabeled individual packages.
Listeria can cause short-term symptoms for healthy individuals, including high fever, muscle stiffness, severe headache, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, per the FDA; it can be more serious for young children, frail or elderly people, and people who are immunocompromised. Listeria can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant people, per the FDA. Doctors diagnose listeria by taking a sample of body tissue or fluid—such as blood, spinal fluid, or a placenta sample—and testing it for the bacteria that causes the infection, per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Treatment for listeria depends on the symptoms caused by the illness. Those with gastrointestinal symptoms, including diarrhea and vomiting, should make sure to stay hydrated, per the CDC; people who develop serious illness after becoming infected may need to be treated with antibiotics.
To date, no illnesses related to the Paris Brothers, Inc. recall have been reported. However, if you think you ate food that may have been contaminated, you should seek medical care if fever or other possible symptoms emerge, such as stiffness or headache, per the CDC; if you ate food possibly contaminated but don’t feel sick, most experts say you don’t need to seek medical care. Anyone who purchased one of the affected products can call 816-455-4188 to inquire about a refund, per the FDA statement.
