Before testing the Helix Plus Mattress I was not aware that mattress brands considered larger bodies in their construction. So, when I had the chance to test a new mattress designed for larger bodies, I jumped at the opportunity. Now that I’ve slept on it for two months, I don’t think I’ll settle for less. Read on for our full Helix Mattress Plus review. While testing, I followed the mattress review criteria by SELF’s panel of sleep experts.
How I Tested
I’ve tested the Helix Plus for about two months now. I had just moved across the country so after setting up the metal bed frame and the DIY slats from the hardware store (the boxspring did not make the move) I was nicely set up. When the mattress arrived, the mattress packaging box was relatively easy to drag from the elevator with help. Though, if you live alone, you’ll need to call a friend to take it out, as lifting it is a two-person job.
About the Helix Plus Mattress
The Helix Plus mattress is designed for “plus size” sleepers with features like additional foam layer, denser foam, and a sturdy full perimeter of edge support. The term plus size here can mean individuals who have higher BMIs due to overall weight, muscle density, or are simply taller and therefore weigh more. However, that is not to say that it’s exclusively for larger bodies. If you’re someone who is looking for a more supportive mattress or you sleep with a partner and need less movement then this mattress could potentially work for you.
Helix also provides a Sleep Quiz that recommends the mattress for your needs and preferences based on age, height, weight, sleep position, and more. See their general sizing chart below for more detail.
A Risk-Free Trial Period
While buying a mattress-in-a-box can save time, it’s challenging to anticipate comfort and support online. Luckily, Helix provides a 100-night sleep trial so that you can test it out worry-free. This trial allowed me to compare the Plus and my previous box-store mattress (that often left me waking up sore, stiff and uncomfortable).
I’m a light sleeper who now relies on prescription sleep aids after cancer treatment so my sleep routine needs are a little specific. My sleep hygiene includes dimming lights and restricting electronic usage before bed. I move around in my sleep so extra room to switch positions is a plus. I often start sleeping on my side and wake on my back. I sleep alone to regulate temperature and limit disturbances, and I do not sleep well in hot environments so I need to be able to stay cool at night.
