Will Matthew Gray Gubler be back for Season 2 of ‘Criminal Minds: Evolution’?

Fans of Criminal Minds: Evolution were disappointed when Matthew Gray Gubler did not return for season 1 of the show, and many are hoping for his comeback in season 2. Showrunner Erica Messer confirmed that despite efforts to bring Gubler back, he will not be returning for season 2. Gubler, who played Dr. Spencer Reid for all 15 seasons of the original Criminal Minds series, was one of two main characters who did not return for Evolution. Despite this, Messer assured fans that Reid’s desk and nameplate will remain on set, keeping hope alive for Gubler’s return in future seasons.

Messer explained that efforts were made to bring Gubler back for season 17, but the Hollywood strikes in 2023 disrupted those plans. However, Gubler has expressed interest in returning to the series in the future. While Gubler’s return remains uncertain, Joe Mantegna will be reprising his role as David Rossi for season 2 of Evolution. Other cast members returning for the new season include AJ Cook, Kirsten Vangsness, Aisha Tyler, Adam Rodriguez, Paget Brewster, and Felicity Huffman, who will be joining the cast as Dr. Jill Gideon.

Despite Gubler’s absence, the show will continue with the remaining cast members working together to solve cases and put away serial killers. Messer teased that Reid and another character, Matt Simmons, are on a special assignment, leaving the door open for their potential return in future episodes. Fans can expect to see how the writers handle their potential comeback if the opportunity arises. Season 2 of Criminal Minds: Evolution is set to premiere on Paramount+ on June 6, promising more suspenseful episodes and thrilling storylines for viewers to enjoy.

While Gubler’s return for season 2 remains uncertain, fans continue to hold out hope for his comeback to the beloved series. The nod to Reid’s character via his desk and nameplate on set serves as a reminder of his presence and the potential for his return in future seasons.
