CNN has announced details for the first presidential debate of the 2024 election cycle, set to take place on June 27 in Atlanta, Georgia. The debate will be hosted by CNN’s Jake Tapper and Dana Bash and will feature President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump facing off in person for the first time since the 2020 election. Both candidates have agreed to follow the rules and format outlined by the network, which includes a 90-minute debate with two commercial breaks where campaign staff cannot interact with the candidates.

The candidates will speak from uniform podiums, determined by a coin flip, with microphones muted except for the candidate speaking at the time. No props or pre-written notes will be allowed on stage, but candidates will have a pen, pad of paper, and a water bottle. The absence of a studio audience will be a departure from previous debates, but moderators will enforce timing and ensure a civilized discussion. The goal is to provide a fair and orderly environment for both candidates to present their views.

In order to participate in the debate, candidates must meet CNN’s qualifications, which include satisfying the requirements outlined in the US Constitution to serve as president and filing a formal statement of candidacy with the Federal Election Commission. All five participating candidates, including Biden, Trump, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Cornel West, and Jill Stein, have met these requirements. Additionally, candidates must appear on enough state ballots to reach the 270-electoral vote threshold and receive at least 15% in four national polls from approved organizations.

While Biden and Trump are likely to meet these requirements, Kennedy has already received 15% in three qualifying polls and is currently on the ballot in six states, making him eligible for 89 Electoral College votes. The debate promises to be a high-stakes showdown that could influence the trajectory of the 2024 election cycle. With the entire nation watching, both candidates will have the opportunity to make their case to the American people and address the pressing issues facing the country.

As the debate approaches, anticipation is building among political observers and voters alike. The event will offer a rare opportunity for the two major party candidates to directly engage with each other on key policy issues and present their visions for the future of the country. The rules and format set by CNN aim to ensure a fair and orderly debate that allows both candidates to effectively communicate their platforms and engage in a civilized discussion.

With the nation facing numerous challenges and issues, including the ongoing pandemic, economic recovery, climate change, and social justice, the debate will be a critical moment for voters to evaluate the candidates’ positions and leadership abilities. The outcome of the debate could potentially sway undecided voters and shape the narrative of the 2024 election campaign. As the candidates prepare to take the stage in Atlanta, all eyes will be on this historic showdown between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump.
