The 2020 summer Olympics in Paris are going to feature 32 sports, including the debut of a brand new sport called breaking. Breaking, also known as breakdancing, is an urban style of dance rooted in hip hop culture that originated in the 1970s in the Bronx and has since expanded globally. Breaking competitions involve B-boys and B-girls showcasing acrobatic moves, fancy footwork, and stylized improv to music provided by a DJ. The athletes compete in one-on-one battles, with judges evaluating them on criteria such as creativity, personality, technique, and musicality.
The breaking competitions at the 2024 Games will feature 16 male and 16 female athletes from around the world, including four dancers from the US. Sunny Choi and Victor Montalvo are among the American dancers who will be competing in breaking. Choi, from Queens, New York, began breaking during her freshman year at the University of Pennsylvania and has since become the first American woman breakdancer to qualify for the Olympics.
Breaking will bring a new level of excitement and entertainment to the Olympics, attracting a younger generation of fans and showcasing the skills and artistry of these talented athletes. The addition of breaking to the Olympic lineup is just one example of how the Games are constantly evolving and adapting to stay relevant and engaging for audiences around the world. With its unique blend of athleticism, creativity, and music, breaking promises to be a highlight of the 2024 Paris Olympics.
All in all, the inclusion of breaking in the 2024 Olympics is a testament to the continued growth and diversity of the Games. It offers a platform for athletes to showcase their unique talents and creativity while bringing a fresh and exciting element to the world’s most prestigious sporting event. As breaking makes its Olympic debut this summer, fans can look forward to witnessing an exhilarating display of skill, athleticism, and artistry from athletes around the globe. So get ready to tune in and cheer on your favorite dancers as they battle it out on the world stage in Paris.
