“One Glove” Jimmerson, Participant in First UFC Event, Dies at Age 60
Art Jimmerson, the legendary boxer, passed away at the age of 60. Despite participating in 51 boxing matches, Jimmerson is most famously remembered for his fight at the first UFC competition in Denver on Nov. 12, 1993. In this bout, he wore only one boxing glove, earning him the nickname “One Glove.” This unique choice was made so that the referees could easily see him tap out if needed, and it is also said that he wore the glove to protect his jab hand. Although he had no experience in mixed martial arts (MMA), Jimmerson courageously stepped into the octagon and faced Brazilian jiu-jitsu master Royce Gracie, who eventually went on to win the tournament.
Despite his lack of MMA experience, Jimmerson’s background as a professional boxer spoke volumes about his bravery and willingness to challenge himself. Former UFC referee John McCarthy praised Jimmerson for taking the art of boxing, in which he was highly skilled, and testing it against a completely new and unfamiliar discipline. Jimmerson’s professional boxing career spanned over 17 years, with his first fight taking place in 1985 and his last in 2002. Throughout his career, he amassed a record of 33 wins and 18 losses, with 17 of his victories coming via knockout. Even after retiring from professional fighting, Jimmerson remained active in the combat sports world, challenging Kimbo Slice to a boxing match in 2011 and later becoming a head boxing coach at a UFC Gym in California.
Art Jimmerson’s legacy in the combat sports world extends beyond his unique fight in the UFC octagon. He was a skilled and dedicated boxer who earned the respect of his peers and fans alike. Despite his final nine losses tarnishing his overall record, Jimmerson’s willingness to step outside his comfort zone and face new challenges exemplified his true warrior spirit. His impact on the sport will be forever remembered, and his contributions to both boxing and MMA will continue to inspire future generations of fighters. It is with heavy hearts that we bid farewell to this legendary athlete, but his legacy will live on in the annals of combat sports history.
In conclusion, Art Jimmerson’s passing marks the end of an era in the combat sports world. His unique fighting style and fearless attitude have left a lasting impression on fans and fellow fighters alike. While he may be most famously remembered for his “One Glove” fight in the UFC, Jimmerson’s professional boxing career and subsequent coaching contributions showcase his true passion for the sport. As we mourn the loss of this legendary athlete, let us also celebrate his life and the impact he had on the world of combat sports. Rest in peace, Art Jimmerson, may your fighting spirit live on in the hearts of all who knew and admired you.
