Ferrari has no plans to turbocharge its V-12 engine in the near future
Ferrari has made it clear that their new V-12 engine will not be getting turbochargers anytime soon. The company’s product development boss, Gianmaria Fulgenzi, stated that turbocharging the engine is not something they are considering at the moment. He explained that Ferrari typically uses turbochargers to downsize an engine while maintaining power output, but the naturally aspirated V-12 in the 12Cilindri, the GT successor to the 812, has not been downsized and instead boasts 6.5 liters of displacement, generating a whopping 830 horsepower in the new supercar.
Despite the challenges of meeting Euro6e emissions regulations, Ferrari invested heavily in ensuring the new engine would comply without compromising performance. The 12Cilindri can accelerate from 0-62 mph in just 2.9 seconds and reach 124 mph in 7.9 seconds, ultimately achieving a top speed of 211 mph. Fulgenzi emphasized the emotional appeal of a naturally aspirated V-12, highlighting the sound and acceleration it delivers across the RPM range. He mentioned that the V-12 engine was deliberately chosen for the new supercar to provide a thrilling driving experience.
The new V-12 engine in the 12Cilindri is reminiscent of the powerplant found in the 812 Competizione, with some key differences. One of these differences is the introduction of Adaptive Torque Shaping, which allows the engine to modify its torque curve in the third and fourth gears. This innovation enhances the performance and driving dynamics of the supercar. Power is transmitted to the rear wheels through an eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox, further optimizing the driving experience.
Despite Ferrari’s commitment to retaining the naturally aspirated V-12 engine, the company is facing challenges to its identity in an ever-evolving automotive landscape. As governments around the world implement strict regulations that aim to ban the sale of combustion-powered cars, Ferrari may need to adapt to meet these new standards. While the V-12 engine is a core element of Ferrari’s heritage, the company will need to explore cleaner and more efficient engine technology to ensure compliance with future regulations.
