The Rare Ferrari Came with an iPod Touch from the Factory
The Ferrari 430 Scuderia Spider 16M is a limited-run model launched in 2008 to celebrate 16 World Constructors’ Formula 1 titles. What makes this exotic cabrio stand out is the inclusion of an iPod Touch from the factory. While Ferrari typically focuses on putting controls in front of the driver to minimize distractions, this model takes a different approach with the inclusion of the iPod Touch. The car was offered with either the iPod Touch or a traditional Becker Cascade radio with iPod and Bluetooth connectivity. Only 499 units of the 430 Scuderia Spider 16M were made, with not all of them featuring the iPod Touch. The iPod Touch came with a 16GB capacity and was housed in an Alcantara sleeve, complete with a quick reference guide.
Before the age of Apple CarPlay, the Ferrari 430 Scuderia Spider 16M featured a removable iPod Touch placed in a dock in the center console. Ferrari has typically shied away from touchscreen displays, believing they detract from the driving experience. However, modern models like the Roma and 12Cilindri have started incorporating center screens. Ferrari was actually the first automaker to fully integrate Apple CarPlay in 2014 with the FF. Apple has since discontinued the iPod Touch line in 2022, as smartphones like the iPhone have made them redundant. With the iPhone performing similar functions and already in people’s pockets, the need for a separate device like the iPod Touch has diminished.
Despite Apple offering a 32GB version of the iPod Touch at the time of the 430 Scuderia Spider 16M’s release, Ferrari opted for the 16GB model instead. This decision may have been in line with the car’s theme of “16,” or perhaps Ferrari wanted to keep costs down. The 430 Scuderia Spider 16M came with a hefty original price tag of $313,350, making it a luxury item for those who could afford it. The inclusion of the iPod Touch was a unique feature that set this limited-run model apart from other Ferraris at the time.
The 430 Scuderia Spider 16M spotted for sale at H.R. Owen in the UK is a rare find, considering only 499 units were produced. The addition of the iPod Touch adds a touch of modern technology to an otherwise classic exotic car. The Alcantara sleeve housing the iPod Touch provides a luxurious touch, while the quick reference guide ensures that drivers can easily navigate the device. Despite the eventual discontinuation of the iPod Touch line, the 430 Scuderia Spider 16M remains a coveted collector’s item for Ferrari enthusiasts.
In terms of audio options, the 430 Scuderia Spider 16M was also offered with a traditional Becker Cascade radio, providing iPod and Bluetooth connectivity. This alternative option allowed drivers to enjoy their music while on the road, with the convenience of modern technology integrated into the classic Ferrari design. Whether choosing the iPod Touch or the Becker Cascade radio, owners of the 430 Scuderia Spider 16M had the opportunity to customize their driving experience to suit their preferences. As a limited-run model with exclusive features, the 430 Scuderia Spider 16M continues to captivate automotive enthusiasts with its blend of performance, luxury, and technological innovation.
