Mazda officially announces next-generation CX-5 with hybrid engine
The CX-5, Mazda’s best-selling model in North America with 153,808 units sold last year, is getting a new generation, as confirmed in a document related to the company’s financial results. The third-generation model will feature a hybrid powertrain developed in-house, though it’s unclear if it will be a self-charging hybrid or have plug-in capabilities. Mazda has previously used Toyota’s hybrid technology for some models, and a hybrid CX-50 is planned for other markets in the second half of 2024. Despite the introduction of the CX-50 in 2022, the CX-5 will not be retired, as the two models will coexist due to the CX-5’s immense popularity in North America.
The expansion of Mazda’s SUV lineup, which now includes models like the CX-70 and CX-90 with rear-wheel-drive platforms and larger inline-six engines, is causing some to question the lineup’s increasing crowdedness. The company also mentioned the stylish electric Mazda6 in the document, indicating it will only be available in China along with a plug-in hybrid option. Mazda’s future plans include the release of its first EV on a dedicated platform in 2027, followed by a significant launch of EVs from 2028 to 2030. This marks a significant shift towards electric vehicles for the traditionally fuel-focused brand, suggesting a commitment to sustainability and innovation in response to evolving market trends.
The new generation CX-5 will mark a significant step forward for Mazda as it enters the hybrid market with an in-house developed powertrain. While the specifics of the hybrid system are still unknown, the company’s track record with Toyota’s hybrid technology suggests a focus on efficiency and performance. The decision to continue production of the CX-5 alongside the newer CX-50 reflects Mazda’s commitment to meeting consumer demand, as the CX-5 remains a top choice in the competitive compact crossover segment. With plans for a hybrid CX-50 in additional markets, Mazda is positioning itself to appeal to a broader range of consumers seeking eco-friendly options.
The evolution of Mazda’s SUV lineup to include models like the CX-70 and CX-90 with rear-wheel-drive platforms and larger engines signals a shift towards more premium offerings in the segment. However, concerns about the lineup’s growing congestion raise questions about brand identity and differentiation among the various models. The introduction of the electric Mazda6 in China, along with plans for a plug-in hybrid option, demonstrates Mazda’s commitment to offering eco-friendly alternatives in its lineup. Looking ahead, Mazda’s ambitious plans for EVs indicate a strong focus on innovation and sustainability, setting the stage for a significant transformation in the coming years.
In conclusion, the announcement of a new generation CX-5 with a hybrid powertrain marks an exciting development for Mazda as it looks to expand its offerings in the increasingly competitive SUV market. The decision to continue production of the CX-5 alongside the CX-50 reflects the company’s strategic approach to meeting diverse consumer preferences and maintaining its market presence. With plans for a hybrid CX-50 in additional markets and a focus on electric vehicles in the future, Mazda is poised to make a significant impact in the automotive industry with its innovative and sustainable approach to vehicle development.
