Many popular European tourist destinations are unfortunately hotspots for pickpocketing, a new study by UK-based travel insurance company QuoteZone has found. Italy, France, Spain, Germany, and the Netherlands all have high rates of pickpocketing incidents reported by visitors at their top attractions. Rome, Paris, Barcelona, Berlin, and Amsterdam have all been highlighted as cities where tourists need to be extra vigilant.

In Italy, Rome was found to be the worst city for pickpocketing, with popular attractions such as the Trevi Fountain, Colosseum, and Pantheon being reported as hotspots for theft. France’s capital, Paris, also has high pickpocketing rates, with iconic attractions like the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, and Louvre Museum being singled out. Barcelona in Spain is notorious for pickpocketing, with Las Ramblas being a particularly risky area, while in Germany, Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate is a common spot for theft.

Amsterdam in the Netherlands, particularly its Red Light District, is another area where tourists are at risk of pickpocketing. Despite these risks, Greg Wilson, Founder and CEO of Quotezone, advises travelers to stay vigilant, avoid wearing expensive jewelry, and carry secure cross-body bags with zips to protect their belongings. Leaving valuables in a hotel safe, not leaving personal belongings unattended, and getting a police report in case of theft are all recommended measures to prevent falling victim to pickpocketing.

As summer approaches and more people plan their European vacations, being aware of pickpocketing hotspots is crucial to ensuring a safe and enjoyable trip. By following these safety tips and staying alert, tourists can reduce the risk of becoming victims of theft while exploring popular European destinations. Travelers should also be mindful of travel insurance requirements and the importance of taking reasonable care of their belongings to avoid potential issues with theft claims. Whether visiting Rome, Paris, Barcelona, Berlin, or Amsterdam, staying cautious is key to avoiding pickpocketing incidents.
