Mercedes Concedes Victory, Reportedly Swaps Four-Cylinder for V-8 in CLE63
The highly anticipated Mercedes-AMG CLE63 is set to debut soon, and there have been some surprising developments regarding its powertrain. Initially expected to feature a 671-horsepower four-cylinder hybrid setup similar to the one in the C63, it now appears that Mercedes-Benz is opting for a V-8 engine instead. According to a report from Autocar, senior officials at Mercedes-Benz have confirmed that the CLE63 will be equipped with a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 engine with mild-hybrid assistance, producing up to 585 horsepower. This decision marks a departure from the original plan, which would have given the CLE63 nearly 100 less horsepower.
The shift to a V-8 powertrain could be a response to public criticism over the high-output four-cylinder engine. Autocar suggests that slower sales of the C-Class in Europe may have influenced this decision. In the United States, sales of the C-Class have seen a slight decline in the first quarter of 2024, with a three percent drop compared to the previous year. Despite these challenges, new C63 models have just arrived in UK dealerships, with pricing announced for the US market in mid-April. The decision to go back to a V-8 engine in the CLE63 has sparked debate, as there is no definitive data on whether buyers prefer the original four-cylinder hybrid setup.
While it remains uncertain if a plug-in hybrid powertrain is being considered for the CLE63, prototypes with charging ports have been spotted, suggesting that Mercedes-Benz is exploring electrified options. Videos of these prototypes show them emitting minimal sound, indicating the presence of the four-cylinder hybrid powertrain. The upcoming CLE63, positioned above the CLE53 with its 443-horsepower inline-six engine, will fall short of the C63 in terms of power. However, it is expected to offer a compelling combination of performance and efficiency.
As the automotive world eagerly awaits the official debut of the CLE63 later this year, Mercedes-Benz has chosen to remain tight-lipped about the recent developments. Despite declining sales and potential backlash, the decision to switch to a V-8 engine reflects the brand’s commitment to delivering a high-performance and exhilarating driving experience. The CLE63 is poised to make a statement in the luxury performance segment, appealing to enthusiasts seeking a blend of power, technology, and refinement. With its potent V-8 engine and mild-hybrid assistance, the CLE63 is shaping up to be a formidable contender in its class.
