The 11 Best Longline Sports Bras, According to a Fitness Instructor: Outdoor Voices, Lululemon, Spanx

Hello, it’s me, SELF’s resident cycling instructor, here to share my passion for the best longline sports bras, because workout tops are overrated. As a full-time Sweaty Person, I don’t need another layer of fabric on top of my sports bra when I’m in the gym.

Longline sports bras are longer than standard sports bras that cut off right below the breast. They came into style around the time that high-waisted workout leggings started gaining popularity. They come in a wide range of colors and patterns, and honestly, I think they’re far more visually interesting than workout tops. Plus, the fitted shape makes me feel confident, which, as a fitness instructor, is one of the most important qualities.

My journey to preaching this gospel began when I found the now-discontinued Outdoor Voices Slashback Crop at the start of my cycling career in college (photo evidence here) and never looked back. I can say with complete honesty that I haven’t worn a workout tank or tee since 2019. From then until now, I’ve purchased hundreds of dollars worth of sports bras (and as a commerce writer, have been kindly gifted a bunch, too), and consider myself a longline sports bra pro.

What should you look for when shopping for longline sports bras?

I have a 34DD chest, so I look for bust support first. Think about which workouts you plan on wearing a longline bra for before making a purchase. HIIT, calisthenics, or running will require a high-support, high-impact sports bra. Activities like cycling, barre, and dance need medium support, while low-impact workouts like yoga and pilates are fine with slinky, light support bras.

I gravitate towards compressive styles because they keep me feeling locked in and bounce-free while I’m riding the bike. If you feel squished in compressive bras, there are some options that have molded cups instead. You’ll want to consider the type of closure you prefer, too. All of the longline sports bras I own are pull-on because I like a tank top style, but pulling on a tight sports bra is not ideal for everyone from an accessibility standpoint. You could shop around for options that have hook-and-eye closures or zip fronts. We love this affordable one from Amazon, this one from cult-favorite, size-inclusive brand SHEFIT, or this buttery soft option from Lululemon

Now that I’ve loaded you with information, take a gander at 11 of my favorite longline bras. Yes, I have all of these. Some of the bras I own are different colors than those shown here, but the product itself remains the same. You’ll find excellent options from brands like Lululemon, Outdoor Voices, Girlfriend Collective, and Target’s Joylab, plus the many reasons why I love ’em. Now, join me and release yourself from the shackles of workout tops!
