Nissan GT-R Outperforms C8 Corvette in Runway Drag Race, Making it Seem Like an Economy Car
When the Chevrolet Corvette finally moved to a mid-engine layout, it was a game-changer for America’s sports car. No longer did it feel outdated or lacking compared to other performance vehicles. However, a simple engine switch doesn’t automatically make it better than rivals like the Nissan GT-R. Despite having two fewer cylinders, the GT-R’s turbocharged 3.8-liter V-6 engine produces an impressive 578 horsepower, compared to the Corvette’s 495 hp. The Chevy does have an advantage in torque, with 470 lb-ft compared to the Nissan’s 466 lb-ft. Both cars have launch control, but the GT-R’s all-wheel-drive system provides an additional edge, even though it adds about 500 pounds to its weight.
In a series of drag races, the GT-R showcased its capabilities by getting off the line first and maintaining its lead against the Corvette. However, when launch control wasn’t utilized in the second race, the GT-R struggled to keep up, allowing the Corvette to take the win. The third race was a close battle, with both cars neck and neck for a time before the more powerful GT-R ultimately pulled ahead to win. In Thailand, where the races took place, both cars were priced similarly at around ฿10,650,000 (~$290,000). In the US, there is a significant price difference between the entry-level Corvette Stingray and the cheapest Nissan GT-R, making a direct comparison challenging.
While the Corvette Stingray and Nissan GT-R may not be direct competitors in the US market due to their price discrepancy, they are more evenly matched in other regions like Thailand. If both cars were priced equally, which one would you choose? The Corvette’s mid-engine layout and torque advantage make it a compelling option, while the GT-R’s impressive horsepower and all-wheel-drive system offer a different set of advantages. Ultimately, the choice between these two high-performance vehicles comes down to personal preference, driving style, and what features matter most to you. Both cars have their strengths and weaknesses, but no matter which one you choose, you’re sure to have an exhilarating driving experience.
