Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney Set Limits on Paying Wrexham Women
Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have found themselves at a crossroads when it comes to compensating the Wrexham AFC Women’s team. Due to regulations in the league, they were unable to pay the women when they were in the amateur status. However, in March 2023, the Wrexham women’s team won a Tier 1 license and became a semiprofessional football team. By June of the same year, 10 women had signed semiprofessional contracts and joined the top women’s football league in Wales, making history as the first Club in North Wales to have a semiprofessional women’s football setup.
Gemma Owen, the head of women’s football operations, expressed excitement over this historic moment, highlighting the impact it could have on young girls in the region. The 10 players who signed on were praised not only for their football skills but also for being great role models. The women’s team also moved to a different stadium, which offered a more sophisticated setup, and they secured more resources and money as a semiprofessional team. It was revealed that if they won the Adran Premier during the 2023-2024 season, they would have the opportunity to compete in the Women’s Champions League.
The Women’s Champions League is a European competition where clubs from different countries compete against each other. This presents a new challenge for the women, as they transition from dominating their division to competing against stronger opponents. New episodes of Welcome to Wrexham, where these developments were discussed, premiere on FX Thursdays. Overall, the progress of the Wrexham AFC Women’s team under the ownership of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney shows their commitment to supporting women’s football and providing opportunities for female players in North Wales.
